Around the World
By: Matt Phelan
This graphic novel tells three stories of people. First is Thomas Stevens, a coal miner and cycling fan who rode a bicycle (one of the early ones with the big front wheel) around the world in 1884. Next is Nellie Bly, a reporter who set out in 1889 to travel around the world in less time than it took Verne’s protagonists, as a publicity stunt in an era when no respectable woman would be seen traveling alone. And finally, Joshua Slocum, who in 1895 sailed away from his New England home aboard his sailboat Spray, and did not return until he’d sailed around the world.

The Lemonade Club
By: Patricia Polacco
Patricia Polacco wrote this story about her daughter, her best friend and their fifth grade teacher. Traci and Marilyn were best friends; they did everything together and were inseparable in Miss Wichelman’s class. Then one day, Marilyn started getting weaker and weaker. Them Miss Wichelman announced to the class that Marilyn had leukemia, a type of cancer. She explained to the class that when she finally came back to school, she would look different and have no hair from the chemotherapy. From then on, Traci and Miss Wichelman became regulars at Marilyn’s house. The three of them formed the lemonade club because when life gave them lemons, the made lemonade. Miss Wichelman hugged Marilyn and told her that she knew how she felt and that when she got married, she wanted Marilyn and Traci to be in her wedding, wearing lemon yellow bridesmaid dresses. When Marilyn returned to school she found a cake on Miss Wichelman’s desk that welcomed her back and she found her classmates all bald, just like her. After a while, the class started growing their hair back but Miss Wichelman still wore the scarf on her head. They later discovered that Miss Wichelman had breast cancer and was going through chemotherapy as well. Five years later, Miss Wichelman got married and both Marilyn and Traci wore lemon yellow dresses as they walked down the isle.

Owl Moon
By: Jane Yolen
This book is about a girl who just wants to spend time with her father. She and her father go owling. They look for the shadows of an owl and they do a “whoo-whoooo” call for the owl to appear. I really liked the concept of this book, it was very creative and it showed that the daughter really wanted to spend time with her father. Although the title of the book tells you the story is about an owl, the main point in this book is that the little girl just liked to be around her father.

Ramona Quimby, Age 8
By: Beverly Cleary
This book is about Ramona Quimby and her third grade life. She just started at a new school and she got to take the bus all by herself. She has an older sister Beezus and parents with money problems. Her dad decided that he was going to go back to college to become an art teacher so the family had to cut back on a few things. Ramona just wanted to fit in at school so she did what every one else did, even if that meant cracking a hard-boiled egg over her head. Third grade was going well for Ramona except she thought that her teacher didn’t like her because she liked too show off sometimes and she didn’t like the boy that sat behind her on the bus, Danny, otherwise known as Yard Ape. I really enjoyed this book and I think it is a good read for children because it is just the life of an average girl and not something magical or spectacular. It is very realistic and I like that.

When I Was Young in the Mountains
By: Cynthia Rylant
This is a story about a young girl who live with her grandparents in the mountains. Her grandfather worked in the coal mines and she looked forward to him coming home every day giving her a kiss on the forehead. They love, appreciate and are proud about their home in the mountains. They liked swimming holes, they pumped pails of water from a well to take baths with, they went to church in the school house on Sundays, and she enjoyed her grandmother’s corn bread, pinto beans and fried okra. The end of the story talks about some of the things the young girl never wanted to do. She never regretted those things she missed out one, because she loved where she lived and that was everything she needed.
